Snap Jackson Exhibits Photo Study at the Tidewater Gallery

Full Description:

A nine-month project funded by a Stockton Arts Commission grant comes to completion when local photographer Snap Jackson presents his work in a public exhibit at the Tidewater Gallery in downtown Stockton. The exhibit will open Monday, April 2, and continue through Friday, May 4. A “Meet-the-Artist” wine and hors d’oeuvres reception will be hosted Friday, April 13, from 5-8 p.m., in conjunction with the Downtown Art Walk.

Entitled “Hole in the Wall,” the exhibit is a documentary photo essay featuring 20 local hole in the wall type businesses like Blackwater Café, Chuck’s Hamburgers, Al’s Comic Shop, and more. All of the photographer’s subjects are rich in history and spirit, a slice of Americana. An example of how fleeting history can be lies in the fact that during the project, four businesses Jackson captured shut their doors to the public: the Hoosier Inn, the Pollardville Chicken Kitchen, Naughty Nicks, and Psychedelicacies.

Jackson was intrigued at an early age with the warmth and character that existed in many of Stockton’s independently owned businesses he would visit with his grandmother. It was a time when everyone knew your name and greeted you when you came through the door. It later became a mission for Jackson to document on film the spirit, soul and beauty that exists within the many small businesses now threatened by “Big Box” corporate America. Jackson has accumulated a large body of works taken in locations around the world. In the past three years he has shown in eight shows in Portland, Brooklyn, Sacramento, San Francisco, Oakland, Los Angeles and as far as Sparta,Greece. The Tidewater exhibit is his first showing of his work in his hometown. The Tidewater Art Center & Gallery is an artists’ collaborative located directly across the street from the county Courthouse at 223 E. Weber Avenue, is open Monday-Friday from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. For further information about the Gallery, artists, exhibits, upcoming art classes or special events, please visit the website at www.tidewaterartgallery.com.
